Something new to my blogs I'm going to incorporate at least once a month, is an article called "The Spinal Column".  It's compiled by my chiropractor, Dr. Gabe Wiener of Fosston Chiropractic Clinic in Fosston, MN.
I was in there the other day to get something called accupuncture done to help relieve the sinus pressure I was dealing with.  I didn't know how it worked, but how ever it does, it sure works well!  Felt like something out of a movie laying there with needles in my face and a couple in my hands, but you could feel the difference as it relaxed the nerves and helped with the pressure put forth in the sinuses.
Adjustments are great for running too.  Helps keep you in check so you can handle all the pounding your body is taking on while running inside or outside.  If you're out of alignment, that can result in pinched nerves, strained muscles and poor posture while running and sitting too.  I've learned a lot about my own personal health from Gabe and I'm glad I can partner with him in support of your health too!
Here is the first edition of "The Spinal Column" that we'll keep rolling into the new year.  Let me know what you think.  Enjoy!

Keeping the Resolution!

As another year passes, many of us have made the resolution to improve some aspect of our lives. Maybe you would like to spend less money, stop smoking, exercise more, eat healthier, or get organized.  Whatever your goal may be, the same methods apply for reaching those goals.  Many people are successful with their resolution while others fail after a good effort.  The most common resolution is to lose weight followed by quitting smoking.  Keeping a health related resolution can be the most challenging to achieve.  Keep in mind that a resolution is a behavior change and changing an undesirable behavior can be difficult.  It takes time and consistency. Since losing weight is the most common resolution, I will focus on ways to help you achieve your resolution.
  • Have a Plan!!  Make your goal reasonable and achievable.  1-2 lbs/week is reasonable.
  • Avoid dieting.  All diets whether it is a low-fat, low-carb., or Weight Watches, have one thing in common, they restrict Calories. Period.   Save your money and try using portion control and eating a balanced diet as a way to reduce Calories.  A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods are your best options.  Vegetables keep you feeling full longer and therefore you eat less!
  • Exercise and physical activity must be done along with reducing Calories.  Thirty minutes every other day is a good place to start and increase the time and intensity after a few weeks.
  • Start your resolution gradually.  It takes 28 days to make a habit or change a behavior.  It can take up to 12 weeks before you notice changes in your body physically.
  • Share your goals with someone, write them down, and be held accountable by that person.

These simple tips will help you achieve your goals.  Don’t get discouraged. You WILL have ups and downs while trying to achieve your goal and that’s OK. Remember, it takes time and consistency. Have a Happy and Healthy 2011!
