Nearing the first complete month of the preparation for 2012, I must say it’s been going very well. The start of this month I put together a plan that I feel will help accomplish the goals that are set for this upcoming year of running and push myself to the next level. Starting out with this team effort, I never made it a big deal to have a finishing time set for myself. Ever since I had a fellow runner tell me that goals are something you should set and really reach for so you can stay... Continue reading ...

It's good to be around others that know what it takes to accomplish a goal. The biggest thing when it comes to getting to where you want in any circumstance is consistency. You can workout for a day and feel pain. You can workout for two weeks and still feel pain. Does that mean you're doing something wrong? Maybe, but in most cases, no. With 2012 already in full force, have you continued to stick with your resolution or has it already started to fade? This article will maybe help you... Continue reading ...
2011: Year in Review
Posted by Kurt Philion on Saturday, December 31, 2011,
I was asked earlier this week, much like throughout the entire year, how the running’s going. Being it’s a new year coming up already this weekend, I will give you a little recap of the year that was 2011. This was a year of many firsts. Not just for running, but other aspects of life too. It was the first time I had the opportunity to broadcast a state football championship for a local team at my work, the first time ever that I grew a full beard (that actually went better than I exp... I’ve been told many times that when I think, it can be dangerous. Depending on who you talk to, they are very confident that indeed, it is dangerous. Well it’s something I do a lot of when it comes to training. When you’re setting up your iPod, mp3 player or in my case, my own personal cell phone to Pandora, you place the ear pieces in each respective ear, crank up the volume and kick the music into gear for the work out that is ahead. I turn it on right when I start loosening up to... Continue reading ...

I had a quick conversation with a kid at the game I broadcast last night. It went something like this: Kid: “Who are those guys?” Me: “That’s my friend Corey and his friend Brian” Kid: “Why do you have that picture of them in your folder?” Me: “So he can be with me at all the games I do.” Kid: “Why don’t you just invite him to the games instead?” Me: “Well they passed away five years ago, they were soldiers, killed in Iraq.” After a quick pause and looking me right in...? This is the week that I've been looking forward to. There's a lot happening personally and professionally for me this week. You never know who you’re going to run into at the gym. Last night while doing a normal workout that consisted of interval running,
Core work and boxing, I met a guy that was a former coach and boxing champion. Not only those, but also a World War II Veteran. This guy was very interesting to talk to. Right when he walked into the gym, I was nearing the end of my second three minute round of three that I was completing with my trainer Chris, who is a retired pro boxer from Detroit Lakes. ...? With no more run events scheduled for the remainder of the year, the schedule still isn’t cleared. It’s not running my mouth in a bad way, but a way that I hope effects people in a positive way. A 7.6 mile run that started at the Fosston High School and ended at the cemetery where Sgt Harmon is resting, in Lengby was done on the day of his funeral, August 27th, 2011. After driving for nearly 3,500 miles within a week’s time, a half marathon or training getting set for such an event doesn’t seem so bad after all. A road trip out east to the north shore of Massachusetts seemed to be fitting for the final run of 2011. I didn’t feel like taking a plane there so driving was the next option.
The trip started on Tuesday the 20th at 4am. I made it as far as I wanted to go, about 1,000 miles the first day to the Cleveland, Ohio area. After a long day ... ? Continue reading ...

Taking a trip that will send me through eight different states should make for an interesting week. The final Freedom Run of 2011 (or maybe two) will be taking place on the east coast, an area of the United States I have never been to. Half of the states I’m going through, or stopping at during some point in the trip, I haven’t been to either. I’ll take it for what it’s worth: a fun experience.

September 7th it is already as I type this and it was already four days ago since we crossed the finish line in Marquette, Michigan during the 10th Freedom Run of 2011. Sometimes it just feels like everything is a clutter. Mixing work with training and personal life of recreation and relaxation your mind starts to wander sometimes. I had a friend tell me recently after asking “So do you have your new year’s resolution ready for 2011?” I had told him my plan, what I’m going to discipline myself to do, then asked him the same thing. His answer: “My resolution is to stick to my resolution.” He added that it’s always ... Continue reading ...
The Hair Challenge
Posted by Kurt Philion on Monday, December 20, 2010,
Some people have been asking me about this and I will tell you this much, the only place I will promote it, other than when people ask about it, is on here. This website blog and Facebook are the only two places I will be making updates about this "Hair Challenge". For anyone that knows me or has grown up around me - you know I haven't had hair for very long during any point of my life. In fact, since I was 14 years old I started cutting my hair by myself with a clipper. That means I've b... Continue reading ...
Battling the sickness
Posted by Kurt Philion on Monday, December 20, 2010,
The popular thing this time of year seems to be catching a nice head cold that brings forth sinus pressure, stuffed up nose, hacking cough and fatigue. Or maybe it's just happening to me? It has been the case for the last few days and it's not that fun. Not only does it affect your daily routine, but of course it will affect your running ability to a certain extent too. This is one of the main reasons I add a couple weeks to my running program each year incase of injury or sickness like t... Continue reading ...

"Hard work pays off!"
Ever heard that saying before? Maybe you've heard it but haven't believed it. I know someone who takes it to heart and has believed it since he started this event in Fargo, ND -- Mark Knutson. I get the magazine Runner's World and sure enough, January 2011 edition, page 83 - one of the top ten places to do your first full marathon....Fargo, ND at the Fargo Marathon! I remember the first event that was held at the Fargo Civic Center back in May of 2005. My parents, sist... Continue reading ...
My Motivation
Posted by Kurt Philion on Thursday, December 2, 2010,
Laying there with my feet flat on the ground, knees up and hands over my head staring straight up to the ceiling of the fitness center after another good workout, I needed to think. I had just finished stretching my muscles…now it’s time to stretch the mind too. It is December 1st already. First day of the month that seems to be everyone’s favorite. It’s a time for holiday cheer, reflecting back on another year and just enjoying time with family and friends. I do all of that as we... Continue reading ...
Talkin' Turkey
Posted by Kurt Philion on Saturday, November 27, 2010,
It always seems like the Thanksgiving holiday brings forth a lot of food. It was no different this year at my parents' place. A great day to spend with the family, for runners it can be a day that will take a lot of time to work off all the pounds you gain in that time! Luckily Thanksgiving falls in the off-season (for the most part) of running. The main marathon events, like the Fargo Marathon, are held in the spring, summmer or fall. It's as if they plan them accordingly to let us pig ... Continue reading ...
Another speech, another success
Posted by Kurt Philion on Wednesday, November 24, 2010,
I like to run, but I also add to that by running my mouth. Not in a bad way, more so speaking about what I'm doing, why I'm doing it and who I'm aligned with. Project New Hope is the orgranization who gets my attention and the attention of those who see us at each race. I've been invited to do some different speeches at events, programs and ceremonies throughout the area including prior to or after runs. It's not part of my training routine, but it helps in the training of quick thinking,... Continue reading ...
Enjoy life
Posted by Kurt Philion on Saturday, November 20, 2010,
Two days ago I turned 28. Everyone keeps telling me once you hit 30 things start to go downhill. Those are some of the same people who have told me during the winter "it's way too cold outside!" and during the summer "it's way too hot outside for me to go out there!" I only know a small percentage of people who truly appreciate what they have, when they've got it, every single day of their life. I am finding more appreciating for my youth, or at least I belive I am still young, after anot... Continue reading ...
Veteran's Day 2010
Posted by Kurt Philion on Sunday, November 14, 2010,
This past week was almost like a blur. It went by so fast with things going on between work and outside of work. Obviously, a day I was surely looking forward to, Thursday November 11th seemed to take a long time to get here, but when it came up, just like anything well worth the wait – it goes by fast! The official preparation for the day started with packing to stay at “Hotel Philion” (my parents’ place) on Wednesday night. After a state showcase show our radio stations aired at... Big day coming...
Posted by Kurt Philion on Saturday, November 6, 2010,
Well it's less than a week now until Veteran's Day. A day to thank a veteran if you haven't done so already each day in the past. It's a day to come together with the local American Legion clubs and celebrate those who have sacrificed for their country and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free. I've got a schedule of events here for the Veteran's Day programs in my home county, Red Lake County on November 11th. We've got a special guest, or should I say, guests... Continue reading ...
My favorite holiday
Posted by Kurt Philion on Sunday, October 31, 2010,
It's just over a week until my favorite holiday of the year. No, it's not quite time to devour some turkey on Thanksgiving, but two week prior to that, it's Veteran's Day. A day to give back the chance to say "thank you" to our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. On Veteran's Day this year, much like last year, I will be in attendance at my alma mater to be part of the ceremony put together by the Legion Post 22 & Lafayette High School's faculty and admin... One step closer
Posted by Kurt Philion on Tuesday, October 26, 2010,
In the last few days, a lot has been accomplished. Good things happen but it takes time. Time to really figure out what you want and what is going to fit best for your purpose. Recently I had the chance to meet with a pretty big company's corporate office about possible partnership/sponsorship for Philco's Freedom Team & Project New Hope. A meeting that lasted about a half hour, maybe a little longer, where a lot was explained and figured out between myself and one employee from this compan... Continue reading ...
Meeting more great people
Posted by Kurt Philion on Tuesday, October 19, 2010,
“There’s more to life than running.” That’s a statement I’ve been told more than once. It sure is true, and I found that out this past weekend. Early Saturday morning – about 4:45am early – it was time to wake up, get some things packed up, shower and head down to Brainerd, MN for a 9:00am meeting. This meeting was going to last all day, which I already knew coming into it. About a month before it, I got a call from the director of the project we’ve aligned this running ... Continue reading ...
Passing the torch
Posted by Kurt Philion on Wednesday, October 6, 2010,
It's been almost a month since the last run with the flag in 2010 - but that hasn't seemed to stop other activity and meetings coming up throughout the year. It also hasn't stopped the progress of this team that is starting to spread out throughout the nation. Just this past Sunday, October 3rd - a guy by the name of James Armstrong with Soldiers Race Team of New Jersey did something very special. I shouldn't really say it like that, because he does this for more than just one guy - but th... Continue reading ...

Hey all, Hope your summer went well and fall is going good so far! The run season is about over for 2010 - but there's still plenty going on that we're working on. Philco's Freedom Team has been entered to what's called the New Balance "Movement Challenge" to try for $25,000 that would go to Project New Hope - the 501c3 organization that supports our war vets and their families. I'm asking you to please go and sign up to help support this cause. All you have to do is log on to www.movementchall... Continue reading ...

...for making my final run something to remember!!!
There was no better way to finish off the 2010 year of running that in the state capital of North Dakota, Bismarck. I had been there just three weeks before to attend my cousin's wedding that was just down the road in Mandan, ND, so I got a little bit familiar with the area. Stayed the extended weekend that started for me Thursday at a friend Jon Hoefer's place. Him, his wife and daughter were great hosts for me and made it a fun four days.... Continue reading ...
Final 5K of the year
Posted by Kurt Philion on Monday, September 13, 2010,
So I didn’t get the pouring rain I was hoping for yesterday, but it was still a pretty good day for a run. I told several people prior to the Dick Beardsley 5K run that was held on September 11th I wanted rain, and more than that – a down pour. Just when you think someone couldn’t get any more crazy, they hear that come out of my mouth. You’d say the same thing if you set two personal records (PR’s) in weather conditions like that. A 5K back in August done in just over twenty-th... Continue reading ...
New run added
Posted by Kurt Philion on Sunday, September 5, 2010,
Summer is about over, but the running isn’t quite to that point. Training has continued the last few weeks following the Gopher to Badger Half Marathon in August. It’s still been going well, mixing in some outdoor running with indoor running, including treadmill hills that were needed for the last run in Stillwater, MN to Hudson, WI.
Just when I thought it was only going to be one more run for the year, we’re going to add to the schedule ONE more run. It makes sense to do so on th... Continue reading ...
More than just a run
Posted by Kurt Philion on Monday, August 16, 2010,
Busy weeks go by very fast, and this one zipped by as if there wasn’t a week at all. It seems like everything was packed together into one day, with each event seeming to last only a few minutes each. That wasn’t the case though. Looking back to the start of the week, it was time to prepare for another Freedom Run, this time starting in one state and ending in another. From Minnesota all the way to Wisconsin we had to run this time around, that’s a long ways! Unless you’re looki... Continue reading ...
Lots to blog

It has been a week with a lot going on, that is for sure. It’s going to take me a while to mention everything that has happened, or is going to happen in the next couple of days. This blog will basically set an agenda for what you’ll find coming up soon, hopefully I’ll be able to accomplish by Monday night for posting on my blog spot here. The next one will entail a little unwelcome news, plus many many things that have happened this week that made for a great end of the week.

Update: 8/3/2010
Posted by Kurt Philion on Tuesday, August 3, 2010,
It seems like a long time ago since a run has been done. That will change next week. I've been invited to run in a couple of runs, one will include the next half marathon of the year. The Gopher to Badger Half Marathon will be happening on August 14th, starting in Stillwater, MN - ending in Hudson, WI. I've never done this run before, but have been to the area. Sounds like it's going to be a very scenic route! Prior to that, along with two other runners in this area, I've been invited to be... Continue reading ...

As you can already see, this site has a new look. For the past couple weeks the webmaster for Philco's Freedom Team (Yola!) has done a great job of putting this together to make it look a little different. It was about time for a change on the site, and here it is! Let me know what you think. I may be putting the guestbook back on, but as of right now, email any comments to the email listed in the Contact section. I look forward to hearing from you and keeping you informed about Philco's... Continue reading ...
Lots of good things going on

Posted July 25th:
Just got in from the 80 degree weather, and a 7.5 mile run on the track in Mahnomen. The heat along with black top isn’t a good mix, but at least there was a breeze! It’s part of the physical training that goes with the territory, whether you like it or not, you just do it. Lots of water has been consumed today now to rehydrate the body and keep it in check so bad things don’t happen. There’s been a lot of good things going on lately, with training, with the organiz...
